Activity
Nematicide, insecticide
Fosthiazate is a soil-applied product with contact activity. Although fosthiazate was reported to have systemic activity, a report from the USDA suggests that it does not. It has both nematicidal and nematostatic activity. The product inhibits infestation of crops and nematode development in roots. It is most effective when incorporated into soil before sowing or transplanting. Fosthiazate also controls aphids, thrips and mites.

In field trials, fosthiazate did not damage target crops although some leguminous plants suffered leaf scorch.

Field trials in 1999-2000 in Idaho, US (4th Int. Cong. Nemat.) compared the efficacy of fosthiazate formulations with Vapam for the control of Columbia root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne chitwoodi) on potatoes. In the first trial, the maximum marketable yield was obtained with separate treatments of Vapam (autumn) and fosthiazate (spring), whereas the second trial produced the best result from a combined spring treatment.

Pot tests (see Korean J. Appl. Entomol., 2002) showed that fosthiazate was highly effective in both pre- and post-plant treatments against Meloidogyne arenaria. Greenhouse studies (Korean J. Appl. Entomol., 2001) confirmed the efficacy of fosthiazate, particularly when applied both pre- and post-plant, for control of the same nematode in vine-grown oriental melons but residue levels exceeded the maximum residue limit.

Environmental fate:
Fate in soil:

The half-life of fosthiazate in soil is dependent on soil type. Field dissipation studies in the US showed that fosthiazate was degraded with a DT90 of 48-92 days and that parent compound and its metabolites do not pose a concern in terms of soil mobility.

Fate in aquatic systems:

The fate of fosthiazate in aqueous systems is dependent on pH.
